Paco Sanchez Park
How can play be reimagined?
The design team set out to change park usage patterns by reshaping play in a variety of ways
Analysis of the underserved community around Paco Sanchez Park pointed to a high need for updated facilities to improve health and social conditions. Local residents weren’t using the existing park, with a nearly 20-year-old playground and dilapidated amenities. The park was a clear choice for city reinvestment to meet the goal of prioritizing health-focused amenities in disadvantaged neighborhoods.
Through an extensive public engagement, we heard from community members that they wanted a place to gather and celebrate, a way to honor Paco, and have year-round family activities.
In a community with historically low equity and health scores, Paco Sanchez Park has become a local treasure , an equitable place to play, and a community health game-changer. On its surface, Paco is a love letter to music and broadcasting, honoring the city’s first Spanish-speaking broadcaster and Hispanic community leader. Closer inspection reveals design that is orchestrated to improve the health of a long-underserved community. Play elements interspersed along an accessible loop draw users of all ages between activities and elevations. This park’s success is demonstrated through a dramatic increase in usage and activity levels by all age groups, encouraging repeat visits by community members who have improved their quality of life.
