Gilbert Regional Park
How can a park reflect a ‘geo to Rio’ design interpretation?
A gradual transition from structured, active play to a natural area preserves the drainage function of the park and natural systems, while also providing a diverse range of recreational experiences
Beginning in 2013, phase 1 of Gilbert Regional Park developed the first 54-acres of a planned 272-acre regional park.
Located primarily on Flood Control District property, Gilbert Regional Park is part of a regional drainage facility. The 272-acre park program works with current and future drainage requirements while transforming the site to connect with the surrounding mountains and geological forms of Arizona through the design of the play elements. The project team worked to update the original master plan and bring a destination play experience to the community. Phase I packed in a range of important elements that immediately supported community members of all ages and interests with a pavilion, plaza, community open space, lake amenity, sports courts, an extensive play space and interactive splash pad.
In 2022, Dig Studio and design team worked closely with the Town of Gilbert staff to update the master plan for the remaining planned park space to the south of the existing completed phases. Program selection and layout, irrigation requirements and capacity, planned facilities and structures, basin flood requirements and grading strategies were key scope items completed in this design process. The focus was on a balanced site that offers a consistent array of flexible spaces and diverse community programming. The natural areas, trails, and dog park programming were expanded in the southern area planned for the most frequent storm inundation.
Dig Studio is now leading the design for all remaining park phases. As the park transitions to the east, it evolves from the structured form of playing fields, to smaller programmed areas for dogs, wheeled activity and flex space. The west side of the park exhibits a more natural character with riparian areas, nature play, and trails weaving through the drainage basin.
