16th Street Renovation
How do you reimagine a historic landmark to not only preserve its legacy but also elevate its function, safety, and public experience for future generations?
By addressing deteriorating infrastructure with strategic design and technical precision, the team created a dynamic, pedestrian-first environment. Sustainable features, public art, and interactive spaces enhance safety and durability, ensuring the landmark remains vibrant and engaging for future generations.
Forty years after its initial installation, Denver's historic 16th Street faced the imperative for a comprehensive revitalization effort. Following a thorough Environmental Assessment and Public Life study, a dedicated design-build team was enlisted to undertake the complete restoration of this civic corridor.
16th Street stands as one of Denver’s most iconic landmarks, celebrated for its exceptional design, enduring materials, and esteemed status as a civic space. It holds the official recognition as eligible for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places. The primary objective of this project was to address the deteriorating infrastructure while ensuring a sustainable maintenance plan. Additionally, the redesign aimed to enhance safety for pedestrians and vehicles while also creating more opportunities for public use, fostering leisure, commerce, and social interaction.
The historic signature paving pattern, featuring granite pavers, will be retained, albeit with an upgraded drainage system and improved surface friction. Both sides of the corridor shuttle will boast a generous ten-foot unobstructed sidewalk space. A sustainable tree canopy will be seamlessly integrated during the replacement of underground utilities, establishing a resilient environment and marking the largest installation of trees in a suspended paving system within the state of Colorado. Strategically placed key nodes will serve as hubs for public life elements, offering seating, climbing features, and interactive spaces that invite visitors to capture memorable moments to share on social media.
