All Saints Shaver Learning Center
How can a school courtyard promote STEM learning?
A new model for intentional outdoor learning spaces connects students with nature, expands opportunities for hands-on learning, and builds community and creativity
The Shaver Learning Commons (SLC) at All Saints Episcopal Day School is a new model for intentional outdoor learning. On an acre of land in the heart of the campus, this new courtyard provides outdoor spaces for innovation, problem-solving, and collaboration.
Closely working with teachers and administrators, the design team learned about the curricular and programmatic requirements of the space. The final design centers on the Fibonacci spiral as its overarching theme, with an interactive sundial at the spiral terminus. Orthogonal walks organize the space into classroom areas within the larger spiral form. Writable panels and open shelves are available for use during instruction. Curved benches are stepped up to surround an informal stage. A “geology wall” references the sedimentary formations found in the Grand Canyon. Raised planting beds situated next to a native-plant pollinator garden and citrus orchard support learning on the basics of biology. The preservation of existing trees seamlessly connects the new learning commons with the existing campus, while also providing shade on the first day of use.
