Thelda Williams Transit Center
How can transit stations become artistic expressions?
Public art is integrated at the stations, transit center and park-and-ride, reflecting the unique character of the communities
The Thelda Williams Transit Center (formerly known as Northwest Extension Phase II) adds 1.6-miles to the line, opening new connections to the West Valley. The project adds three new light rail stations and includes a series of “firsts” for Valley Metro and the community: the first elevated station, a rail-only bridge over I-17, and a four-story parking garage, and a multi-modal transit center. The new transit center provides bus connections and a new park-and-ride garage.
Dig Studio led urban design, landscape architecture, and artwork coordination during the design phase. Public art is integrated at the stations, transit center and park-and-ride, reflecting the unique character of the communities they serve. Planters, native trees, seating benches, and vertical planted screens allow riders to wait comfortably for their bus in the transit plaza.
