City Park Golf Course
How can a golf course play a key role in a regional stormwater system?
As one of four projects in the Platte to Park Hill Stormwater Program, City Park Golf Course redesign focuses on flood prevention, reforestation and improved water quality for Denver’s northern neighborhoods
City Park Golf Course lies in the middle of a flood plain where increased stormwater volume caused frequent neighborhood flooding affecting thousands of homes. The challenge: redesign a historically designated 1913 public golf course in the heart of an urban environment without changing its character or removing a significant amount of existing tree canopy, while providing green infrastructure.
The landscape architect worked seamlessly with the golf course architect, civil/stormwater engineer, an arborist and the clubhouse architect to shape an integrated design solution. The result: environmental and community benefits including newly constructed wetland habitat areas, preserving the majority of the existing trees, introducing a new urban forest succession plan, converting potable irrigation water from the City’s new reclaimed grey water system, and improving golf course layout and playability with a new clubhouse amenity open to the public.
