Dig Studio and Lake Flato revamp Scottsdale Civic Plaza for "increasingly warming world"
Emphasizing a “preservation first” approach, the Scottsdale Civic Center meets the diverse needs of its community while serving as a vibrant hub for social, cultural, and recreational activities. The design team aimed to enhance the site’s sustainability, increase shade, and maintain connections to the existing Bennie Gonzales-designed civic buildings, all while creating year-round programs and public spaces that address climate adaptation strategies in Scottsdale’s hot and arid environment. Using a low-maintenance material palette, the architecture includes a main stage and circular event pavilion whose undulating structures reference the fluid movement of dance.
“In dense urban areas such as this, environments like the Scottsdale Civic Center are often the only green spaces available, crucial for mitigating urban heat islands and supporting public health,” remarked the design team. “Therefore, the goal became not only creating a comfortable refuge in the desert for residents but also making sure the landscape would be set up to thrive in an increasingly warming world.”The Scottsdale Civic Center sets a noteworthy blueprint of how thoughtful urban design can balance community needs with sustainability and environmental stewardship.
